How to play with the generator

  1. Set up. Choose the number of players (3 to 12) and a category, or leave it on mixed.
  2. Pass the phone. Each player taps to see their secret word, remembers it, hides it and passes the phone on.
  3. Give clues. Going round, each player says one word that fits their secret word. Not too obvious, or the imposter learns the word.
  4. Vote. Talk it out, then everyone points at the player they think is the imposter. Tap reveal to see who it was.

Close word or hint: which mode?

Close word is the classic word imposter game, also called Undercover. The imposter gets a word that is almost the same, like espresso instead of cappuccino, and doesn't know they are the odd one out. Their clues almost fit, and that is the fun.

Hint is close to the Mr. White variant. The imposter knows, and only gets the category. It is easier to catch them, so it suits younger players and big groups.

Where the words come from

The generator picks from our 270 free word pairs in 9 categories: everyday objects, food and drinks, places, office and work, funny, hard, kids, sports, christmas. It doesn't repeat a pair until the whole category has been used. Prefer paper? Browse the imposter game words and pick your own.

FAQ

How does the imposter game generator work?

Pick how many are playing and a category, then pass the phone. Each player taps to see their word, then hides it and passes it on. Everyone gets the same word except one random player, the imposter.

Does the imposter know they are the imposter?

In the close word mode, no: the imposter gets a word close to everyone else's, like tent instead of cabin, and has to work it out from the clues. In hint mode the imposter is told, and gets the category as a hint.

Is it free? Do I need an app?

It is free and runs in any phone browser. There is no app, no account, and nothing is saved.

How many players can play?

From 3 to 12 on one phone. With a big group, keep clues to one word each so a round stays quick.

Can everyone use their own phone instead?

Yes, with Echo. Open it on a TV, a laptop or a Zoom screen share, and everyone joins on their own phone with a room code. Echo deals the words, shows all the clues on the big screen at once, and counts the votes.
